Discovering Hidden Habits: A Journey in Awareness

discover hidden depths

Working virtually has been an eye-opener in many ways. One unexpected insight? I realized I have a habit of spraying perfume every morning once I’m dressed for work—even if my “commute” is just to my desk!

This got me thinking about habits and behaviors we’re often unaware of because we’re so deeply immersed in them. According to Robert Kegan’s Constructive Adult Developmental Theory, we are often subject to our behaviors, meaning we act on autopilot without realizing it. It’s only when we step back and become object to those behaviors—observing them—that we recognize we have a choice: to keep, refine, or let them go.

For me, this small habit of wearing perfume is a reminder to show up fully, even in a virtual space. It’s a behavior I choose to keep because it sets the tone for my day.

What hidden habits have you uncovered in your work or personal life? Have you decided to embrace them, refine them, or let them go?

Let’s start a conversation about becoming more aware of our choices and how we show up in the world.
